The “Experimental Biology” Master study programme covers all aspects of biological and biomedical research as deeply as possible, through lectures, practical courses and seminars. Over two years students acquire key knowledge of molecular- and cellular-level biological, biochemical and biophysical processes, their close interconnections, links to structural features of biological systems, and their functional significance in multicellular organisms, especially humans. The curriculum focuses on recent developments in experimental biology and biomedicine, and their applications, including new procedures for DNA cloning, gene technologies, molecular- and cellular-level genetic manipulations in plants and animals, sub-microscopic analytical methods, immunochemical and immunobiological procedures for visualizing cell structures, genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and medicinal aspects of biology. A major theme is biomedicine within a framework of physiological and molecular-biological principles of important human diseases. The curriculum is geared to foster understanding of basic principles and mechanisms of human illnesses (pathophysiology) and associated drug development strategies (pharmacology). The curriculum includes all the specialised courses required to equip graduates with the laboratory skills and methodological expertise required. Graduates are entitled to practice as regulated health professionals of laboratory methods and the preparation of medicinal products (according to act N. 96/2004 Sb.) for employment in medical facilities. The graduates have to acquire broad biological and medicinal knowledge with a particular emphasis on modern methods and approaches in experimental biology, biotechnology and biomedicine. During their studies, particular attention is paid to developing their creativity, linguistic competence and ability to formulate, express and communicate their own scientific hypotheses and results. The programme concludes with the presentation and defence of an experimentally-based thesis and a final state master examination. The graduates are trained and ready to work as independent scientists or research workers, as managers in science and laboratory settings, or to proceed to postdoctoral studies in biology, biochemistry or biomedicine.
