The “Experimental Biology” Bachelor study programme covers all aspects of biological and biomedical research as deeply as possible. It is an important component of the “Biology” programme. During the three-year programme students first obtain fundamental knowledge (through lectures, practical courses and seminars) of key natural science disciplines (biology, mathematics, chemistry and physics). They then take specialised courses in molecular and cell biology, microscopy, biological classification of plants and animals, general genetics, experimental biology, microbiology, physiology (human, animal and plant), developmental biology, immunology, pathophysiology and pharmacology. In practical courses and seminars the students become acquainted with recent experimental biological, physical and chemical methods, their practical applications, and advanced technological and methodological procedures for observing submicroscopic and molecular structures. The Laboratory of Growth Regulators of Palacký University in Olomouc has overall responsibility for the curriculum, but various lectures and courses are provided by other departments of the Faculty of Sciences (including Depts. of Theoretical Physics, Cell Biology and Genetics, Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry), Medical Faculty (including Depts. of Medical Chemistry and Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Immunology and Clinical Allergology, Physiology, and Microbiology) and the Institute of Experimental Botany (ASCR) in Olomouc. These departments provide focused teaching in fundamental topics. The Academy of Science Institute is responsible for teaching genetic disciplines, in which it has an international reputation. Thus, the study programme has strong, secure interdisciplinary foundations. It concludes with students presenting a bachelor’s thesis on a selected methodological topic and sitting a final state bachelor’s examination.
